What are PCD tools?

PCD tools are Polycrystalline Diamond tools, a synthetic diamond, produced in a laboratory by means of a sintering process.

Diamond is the most durable, naturally-existing material, but some laboratory-produced synthetic diamonds boast a greater hardness, thermal conductivity and electron mobility than natural diamond.

Polycrystalline diamond is therefore:

  • Suitable for cutting tools, as it maintains the same shape and strength, even if a part of the metal matrix is removed.
  • Suitable for processing non-ferrous materials, because it is able to react to elements such as iron and cobalt, which cause the tool to degrade.

Therefore, PDC tools are produced with the functional part covered with polycrystalline diamond grains, randomly oriented and bound to a tungsten carbide substrate.

    The main characteristics of PCD

The main characteristics of PCD are therefore:

    • Hardness
    • Abrasion resistance
    • Robustness
    • Toughness
    • High thermal conductivity
    • A very good cutting quality

These characteristics therefore make it suitable for:

    • Processing non-ferrous materials: aluminium alloys, carbon fibre, ceramic, graphite, plastics, rubber, wood, polycarbonate, copper, titanium or platinum.
    • Processes that require precision and wear resistance.
    • The production of tools, such as precision countersinks and reamers, in addition to turning, milling and insert tools.

What are the main advantages to using PCD tools?

The main advantages of PCD are as follows:

    • High machining speed
    • High wear resistance
    • Reduced machine downtime for tool replacement tasks
    • The tools have a long service life
    • Increased efficiency and production quality
    • Better performance
    • Consistent quality of the pieces produced, in terms of the degree of finish
    • Reduced production costs
